What are two main types of Marine Wakeboard Tower Speakers?

There are two main types of speaker technologies used in Wakeboard speakers. The first is those that use a horn style driver (compresion horn or HLCD) and the second that use a dome style tweeter. Each one has it advantages and reasons people love them.

When you add wakeboarding speakers to your wake board tower the purpose is to “throw” your tunes back to the rider being towed by the boat – usually 20-80 feet behind the boat. It takes power and focus to “push” the sound back to that wake-boarder or water-skier. The difference between Horn-Loaded Compression Drivers (HLCD) and dome tweeters is how they can “push” that sound.

HLCD Wakeboard Tower Speakers (Horn Tweeter) – These marine speakers are typically the most effective at “pushing” your music back to the rider. The reason for this is the Wakeboard Tower Speakers horn shape focuses the acoustic energy back at the rider. They are also extremely efficient speakers often times playing louder off the same amount of power as other marine tower speaker systems. Some popular examples of these types of tower speakers are Wetsounds Pro-80′s, Rev10′s and Pro-485′s. Exile offers the XM-7 and XM-9 Wakeboard Tower Speaker systems. If your looking to dominate the lake and play loud this type of Wakeboard speaker is your best choice.

Dome Tweeter Wakeboard Tower Speakers - A more conventional looking speaker these systems. Running from entry level systems like the Bazooka Tubbies to top performing speakers like the JL Audio M770-ETX systems riders love the balanced sound quality and wide spread these systems offer. Bazooka’s speakers systems get you rocking without breaking the bank, while JL Audio’s may cost a bit more than your average wakeboard tower speaker our customers often say they are the best they have ever heard!

Do I need an amplifier for my Wakeboard Tower Speakers?

YES! Your marine radio may have power built in, but it can only deliver about 15-17 watts per channel of clean usable power (regardless of that 200W sticker on the box or faceplate!). To get those beautiful new tower speakers sounding loud and clear for your rider you will need a minimum of 75 watts RMS per speaker. Typically we recommend 100 to 150 watts RMS per speakers for most systems and for those who want to really rock you need to look at 250-350 Watts per channel RMS.  The RMS part of the rating is very important here, if your looking at specs things like “max”, “peak” or “total power” that won’t do you any good. Those ratings are usually based on output with very high distortion, or something the marketing department of that brand decided they needed to have in order to make the product attractive to a consumer. (Like that $99 amp you saw that was “1000 Watts Max Power” but only had a 15 amp fuse on it).

Having a good quality Marine Amplifier on your wakeboard boat tower speakers will make sure they crank out loud clear tunes and don’t harm your speakers. Most modern Marine Amplifiers are also very efficient reducing the draw they place on your boats electrical system.

What else do should I get for setting up a wakeboarding boat or ski boat?

There are couple popular accessories for Wakeboard tower speakers:

- Dedicated Volume Control – This is great for giving you quick control over the volume of your tower speakers vs the rest of your system. Driven Audio can help you select and install one of these as the type you need will vary depending on the configuration of your system.

- Audio Controller and hailer – This is probably the #1 accessory we install with wakeboard tower speakers and marine amplifiers. The Wetsounds WS-420 is a killer unit that gives you quick and powerful control over the total sound of your boat stereo. With separate controls for Tower and In-Boat speakers including volume, bass, mid-bass, midrage and tweeter EQ’s, subwoofer control and a hailer mike input to communicate back to your rider it pretty much gives you everything a tow boat operator could want.
