A client from Abbotsford, BC, brought his 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 Single Cab to Driven Audio to have a custom audio system designed and installed. We worked with the client to understand his goals for the system and after checking out the truck, let him audition several products in our showroom. We came up with a plan for a custom installation and, with the approval of the client, scheduled an appointment to start the build.
Custom Amp Rack And Subwoofer Enclosure
The focus of the system was on the amp rack and subwoofer enclosure. We started by removing the seats from the truck, then we applied a layer of SoundSkins damping and several foundation panels to the back wall of the truck. From there, we built up a pair of subwoofer enclosures – one on each side. The enclosures would each be home to an Audiomobile 2410 D4 10-inch subwoofer. We added strips of red LED lights around the perimeter of each subwoofer enclosure to give the subs a nice bright glow. Our technicians built large shrouds to cover the enclosure faces and cut openings in each to allow the sub to play into the truck.
We mounted an Audison AV5.1k amplifier vertically between the subwoofer enclosures. The AV5.1k produces 75 watts per channel for the tweeters, 140 watts for the woofers and 1,000 watts for the subwoofers. We created a second shroud to go around the amplifier. Our technicians got a little creative with the design – adding more red LED lighting and horizontal raised accents finished in vinyl.
Factory Source Unit Interface Solution
To extract an audio signal from the factory source unit, we implemented an Audison Bit 10 processor. This processor accepts the speaker level outputs from the radio and allows us to apply equalization, crossovers and time alignment to five dedicated output channels.
Front Door Speakers and Treatment
We started preparation for the installation of a set of Morel Hybrid 602 components by stripping the doors apart. We lined the inside of the door with Blackhole Tiles to absorb energy in the door cavity. We applied a layer of SoundSkins sound deadening to the interior door skin.
With the system installed, our technicians started the process of setting up the Bit 10 and the amplifier. We used our oscilloscope and RTA, along with our collection of reference music to set the system up so that it would sound exactly the way the client likes.
